| Welcome to my home page. As a professional captain, marine surveyor, writer, cruiser and all around boat enthusiast, I hope you find something here to inform or entertain you. I guess I've been around boats all my life, sometimes for fun and sometimes for profit. The family joke is that I learned to sail before I learned to walk. Who can remember so far back? I've cruised about 15,000 ocean miles on sailboats, and I've been up and down the ICW at least 5 times on my trawler. I was a Harbor Patrolman at Catalina Island in California. I was the dock master of a 500 slip marina in Marina Del Rey, California. I've built a number of small skiffs and dinghies, and maintained my own fleet of towboats when I owned Vessel Assist in Marina Del Rey for 9 years. I continue to operate a rescue boat each summer on Block Island, RI for Safe/Sea. During the other three seasons, I'm based in Myrtle Beach, SC, where I stay busy with surveying and writing articles for marine trade and national publications like PassageMaker Magazine. All totaled, I’ve been involved in marine related businesses for 17 years, and I’ve seen some pretty weird stuff. I even towed an ultra light airplane! Over the years, there’s been a lot of broken boats, sunken boats, burned up boats and general maritime mayhem. I have also fixed a lot of broken boats, raised a lot of sunken boats, extinguished a few burning boats and found far too many lost boaters. Of course, its not all disasters all the time. There are sunrises, and peaceful canals, and afternoon naps and the pleasures that draw us to boating to begin with... |
